ESCi - The Integration of the IMU(Inertial Measurement Unit) into ESC(Electrical Stability Control)

Abstract

In this paper, we present the integration of the IMU(Inertial Measurement Unit) into ESC(Electrical Stability Control) ECU(Electrical Control Unit). The IMU consist of a gyroscope and an accelerometer, where gyroscope measures yaw rate value, and accelerometers measures longitudinal acceleration value and lateral acceleration value.

Traditional ESC System composes of ESC ECU, HU(Hydraulic Unit), and external IMU. The Electrical Stability Control that judges vehicle behavior using IMU. Normally, an ESC system concept measure yaw rate value, and compares it with calculated yaw rate value. When a gap is over 5deg/sec, a ESC controls each wheel via brake pressure control. In this case, an IMU measures real vehicle yaw rate value; therefore, an IMU is an important sensor for an ESC system. An ESC ECU and a HU are located in an engine room, and an IMU is located in the center of the vehicle. This means vehicle manufacturers and suppliers waste their effort and cost, but the integration will be cost saving for the vehicle manufacture. vehicle manufactures save unnecessary effort(IMU installation, IMU wiring harness, and making IMU space) and cost(housing, components, etc.), so they will like to receive offers of new integration ECU that combines an IMU and the other ECUs.

First of all, we have studied the market trends, and discovered what can do well in this market. We believe that we should develop the IMU integrated in the ESC ECU. In a view of point of Tier-1 like us, this integration ECU is very close to the needs of our customers. This integration cause some problems through the occurrence of unwanted resonance frequency. We propose what problems we have, and how to solve them.
