Abstract

The progress of Electronic Stability Program (ESP) technology has improved the controllability of brake force, and made it possible to use ESP not only for improving safety but also to enhance driving pleasure and comfort. Dynamic Cornering Enhancement is a newly developed feature based on the preciseness of brake force control and quietness during the operation of the ESP actuator. Drivers sometimes have to steer and brake simultaneously while cornering. When a driver executes these operations harmoniously, a vehicle can run through a curve smoothly and stably. Dynamic Cornering Enhancement automatically applies the brake in the manner of a skilled driver on a curve. This feature monitors the steering angle to estimate the driver's state, including skill level and concentration on driving, and calculates the brake pressure adaptively to match the driver's braking operation. This feature gives the driver a secure feeling and contributes to smooth driving operations for reduced vehicle roll. The results of vehicle tests and why a driver feels so will be reported in this paper.
