Abstract

On the basis of former research on fuel consumption in the function of engine start up temperature it was decided to apply heat accumulator for cooling liquid in order to preheat the engine before its start up. Lengths of typical driving cycles by passenger cars were quoted from literature and own measurements. Histogram of taxicab drive and stopover lengths in the city of Gdańsk was presented.. Processes of passenger car engines heating and cooling during short urban driving cycles were presented. Engine test bed with experimental cooling system and heat accumulation in the cooling liquid was presented. Measurement results of cylinder liners heating by pumping warm cooling liquid from heat accumulator to engine block and head were described. It was empirically found that increase of cooling liquid temperature before engine start up with the use of heat accumulated in the cooling liquid is possible.
