Abstract

Diesel engines, having higher combustion efficiency and emitting less CO2 than gasoline-powered engines, are environmentally friendly internal combustion engines in nature. Commercial diesel vehicles, in particular, are taking a major role in supporting industries and physical distribution. DENSO has addressed development of fuel injection system of diesel engines to further enhance the high combustion efficiency and successfully developed in 1995 the world’s first common rail system for commercial vehicles for practical use, which is called the first generation common rail system. In 2002, mass production of the second-generation system began. It provided injection pressure “180 MPa”, the highest pressure at that time, and five multiple injections per stroke, capable of injecting small injection quantity at high accuracy. The 3rd generation common rail system providing “200 MPa” and nine multiple injections was developed and mass production began in 2007.Presently, DENSO is promoting development of “300MPa” 4th generation common rail system to respond to the next generation demand.
