Abstract

It is expected that the transportation sector will face considerable changes in the near future not only regarding alternative vehicle technology but also alternative energy sources. The main goal of the present study is to analyze the impact of this market share increase of alternative vehicle technologies in terms of energy consumption and CO2 emissions in the Portuguese light-duty fleet, in a full life-cycle perspective. Several scenarios of alternative vehicle technology introduction were studied for Portugal: SC. 1 - BASELINE TREND (8% of LDV fleet displaced); SC. 2 – POLICY ORIENTED (44%); SC. 3 – ELECTRICITY POWERED (90%), for LDV; and SC. 4 – HDV and BUSES (30%) to add the contribution of HDV and buses to the total road transportation sector. Up to 42 and 13.1% reductions in TTW and full LCA energy consumption were obtained, and 57 and 25.7% for TTW and LCA CO2 emissions in the 2050 time horizon. Additionally, up to 1-2% gains can be achieved if increasing renewable energy integration in the electricity generation mix is considered.

Keywords: alternative vehicle technologies; energy and CO2 emissions; renewable electricity integration.
