Abstract
The Institute of Combustion Engines and Transport (Poznan University of Technology) in collaboration with BOSMAL Automotive R&D Centre has been working on oil consumption in the aspect of toxic compound emissions. The paper comprises a description of both the conventional and laser treatment of the cylinder block. In addition, it presents the results of the research carried out in order to define the influence of the cylinder block laser treatment on the toxic compound emissions. The tests were conducted at test stands based on turbocharged CI engines with Common Rail. Each engine was equipped with a cylinder block either conventional- or laser-type. The results of toxic compound emissions were referred to EURO V standards. Furthermore, the paper provides the quantitative analysis of oil loss in: the crankcase ventilating system, the oil lubricating system of the turbocharger (the amount of the oil that passed through the inlet system and the exhaust system). Additionally, it analyses the influence of the cylinder surface texture and the piston with piston rings on the toxic compound emissions, especially PM and HC. The emission measurements were carried out with the use of AVL devices. Currently, further and more detailed research is being conducted so as to examine thoroughly the correlation between the cylinder block treatment and the emissions.
