Abstract
In order to address the issues of CO2 emissions, urban air quality and fossil energy resources, Toyota has been developing hybrid technology since the 1990s. The 1.8L gasoline engine of the new Prius features several technologies to reduce fuel consumption as well as pollutant emissions. Based on the Atkinson cycle for high thermal efficiency, the new engine introduces an electric water pump allowing a beltless engine design, an exhaust heat recovery system, cooled EGR. With these improvements, the new engine delivers lower fuel consumption and higher performance than the engine of the previous model at the same time.
