Abstract

BMW‟s energy strategy EfficentDynamics focuses on a multistep procedure to (near) zero emission mobility. In addition to battery electric vehicles that are most suitable for urban mobility hydrogen internal combustion engine and fuel cell vehicles are a promising (near) zero emission technology for more versatile vehicles with high energy and range requirements. The main challenges of hydrogen mobility are hydrogen vehicle storage and infrastructure availability. Based of the lessons learnt from the Hydrogen7 small series vehicle with liquid hydrogen storage, BMW is pursuing a new approach for a combined cryogenic and compressed hydrogen storage, namely cryo-compressed hydrogen storage. This paper discusses basic advantages of cryo-compressed storage and infrastructure technology in comparison to alternative electric and hydrogen vehicle storage systems and discloses recent advances of BMW‟s proof of concept for cryo-compressed hydrogen vehicle storage.
