This presentation deals with the calibration of the control parameters of automatically shifting transmissions (AT, DCT and AMT) in terms of comfort and spontaneity of the gear shifts. At present, the calibration process is mainly carried out on test grounds and public roads. It is evident that more and more vehicles have been equipped with automatically shifting transmissions. The variety of versions additionally increases since more and more combinations of vehicles and engines with automatically shifting transmissions are offered. The increasing number of combinations also requires more personnel for the calibration. To resist this increased requirement, researchers at the Institute of Automotive Engineering (IAE, Technical University of Braunschweig) developed tools and methods which result in a considerable increase in efficiency when calibrating the control parameters. They include:

1.) Objective evaluation of the shift processes in terms of comfort and spontaneity, based on tests with test persons.

2.) Transfer of the calibration process from road to roller dynamometer to improve reproducibility, safety and time expenditure.

3.) Automated calibration of the transmission by means of empirical models of the transmission shift behaviour.
