Abstract

Keywords: CFD, brake cooling, validation, cooling-down time

This paper describes CFD simulation and validation of automotive brake disk cooling processes during a defined braking cycle. Using the CFD-Code EXA PowerFLOW 4.0, the air flow pattern around a fully detailed car geometry including a detailed underhood compartment has been calculated. Wheel rotation has been taken into account via MRF modelling. Mean values of heat transfer coefficient and convective heat flux are presented and used to calculate cooling-down times with a lumped model approach. The results are compared to experimental values from the IVK Thermal Wind Tunnel. Furthermore, investigations on in-vane flow and heat transfer are presented and options to reduce turnaround times are shown.
