Vision sensors and infrared sensors are already playing a significant role in the automotive field. Particularly, the Night Vision (NV) function, introduced in Europe in 2005, provides a useful assistance to the car driver by helping assessing risks at night. One of the technologies used for Night Vision, Far Infrared (FIR) cameras, is particularly adapted to the detection of vulnerable road users and animals.
After the successful introduction of its first generation of FIR-based NV system, Autoliv has developed a new functionality using the same sensing technology: the automatic detection of pedestrians for driver warning. This new product is now ready for applications on car manufacturers programs.
The paper is giving an overview of the capabilities of this new function and a description of its main components.
