Subaru developed a next generation driving assist system that realized Pre Crash Brake (PCB) for objects including pedestrians and Full Speed Range Adaptive Cruise Control (FSR-ACC) only with the new stereo camera. In 1999, we commercialized the world's first driving assist system with the stereo camera. Since then, this system has been evolved as one of the Subaru's unique safety technologies. The new stereo camera has dramatically improved recognition performance and reliability in bad weather conditions that have been seen as a defect of conventional stereo cameras. In addition, the miniaturization and cost reduction were achieved by housing the new stereo image processing LSI into the stereo camera unit. The next generation driving assist system with the new stereo camera can detect various objects on the road such as a forward vehicle, bicycles, pedestrians, or lane lines with high accuracy. The system also gives appropriate warning and brake control for offset collision that are difficult for the conventional systems. All these features helped to realize the PCB for not only vehicles but also bicycles and pedestrians, and FSR-ACC that can select a forward vehicle appropriately in various traffic situations. This paper describes the function and construction of the next generation driving assist system.
