Abstract

Keywords: CCS, New Combustion System, Future Fuels, Diesel Engine, Gasoline Engine

Current petrol and diesel engine developments reveal a trend towards hybrid combustion systems, which are becoming increasingly similar, as shown in Figure 1. Within Group Engine Research at VOLKSWAGEN AG, concepts for partial self-ignition in the case of the petrol engine (GCI) and for partial homogenisation in the case of the diesel engine are being intensively studied to achieve this. The objective is to combine the advantages of the low-emission petrol combustion system with the efficiency of the self-igniting diesel combustion system.

Within Group Engine Research at VOLKSWAGEN AG, the mreging of both combustion systems is referred to as the CCSÒ combustion system. To achieve this, fuels whose properties meet the requirements of the combustion system are particularly used.
