An all-new 4.6 liter V-8 SI engine (TAU: Tech Advanced and Unparalleled) has been designed and developed by Hyundai Motor Company. It is the Hyundai´s first in-house V-8 spark ignition engine while aimed to produce class-leading specific power, torque, and fuel efficiency in naturally aspirated engines. This paper shows the main features of the engine and the results of development works.

State of the art technologies in the gasoline engine field have been employed in the Tau such as double overhead cam shafts with CVVT (Continuously Variable Valve Timing), VIS (Variable Induction System), all aluminium cylinder head, all aluminium HPDC (High Pressure Die Cast) cylinder block, and 32 bit engine control unit. Inner structure of the intake manifold, intake and exhaust ports, valve sizes, combustion chamber and piston shapes have been mainly improved during the development works with rated engine speed extended to 6,500 rpm. Induction and exhaust systems have been also best-tuned to achieve the engine performance without worsening NVH level.

With these technologies and development works, the engine rated power reaches around 380 PS at 6,500 rpm with using premium gasoline fuel (RON 96), which is more than 82 PS/L in specific power. This level of specific power is among the highest for the currently mass-produced V-8 engines including GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) engines. BSFC (Brake Specific Fuel Consumption) of the engine at 2,000 rpm / BMEP 2.0 bar is lower than 355 g/kWh, which is competent to that of the engines even with a variable valve lift system or homogeneous GDI technologies. The Tau 4.6 liter engine is equipped in Hyundai´s sport luxury sedan named Genesis, which will achieve from zero to sixty mile/hr in 5.7 seconds and comply with the Ultra Low Emission Vehicle standards (ULEV-II). In the future, the Tau will be also available in larger displacements with any combination of variable valve systems, direct injection, and etc.
