In modern vehicles batteries have to supply consumers with electrical energy both while driving and during standstills. Not only safety-related features but also convenience functions contribute to rising energy consumption. Energy management balances the electrical power required by the consumers against the power provided by the alternator and battery. As a part of the energy management system, Hella´s Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS) measures the physical battery variables voltage, current and temperature and allows to calculate the state of charge (SOC) or state of health (SOH) of the battery, respectively. Using the Intelligent Battery Sensor, the vehicle´s energy management system detects the critical state of charge of the battery and can switch off certain consumers if required, to reduce the overall energy consumption. The IBS is positioned on the battery post in the standardized battery post area as part of the forged battery clamp. Hella has developed its own Battery Monitoring System (BMS) which tracks State of Charge, State of Function and State of Health. Combining these three information improves the overall quality and reliability of the electrical system in the vehicle and is a key factor for new functionalities like idle-stop. Besides vehicle operation the IBS offers also advantages for production and service.
