Using the technology of light emitting diodes (LEDs) will open the door for new interior light concepts to express the high-value of a car which is an essential differentiator for OEMs and their brands. The small packaging space allows new styling features where light elements can be placed in a way that cannot be realized with conventional lighting technology.

The perceived quality of a car can be increased when interior light is used as a design feature that offers comfort and increases room awareness. Different light scenarios can be chosen to give a maximum of well-being for the driver and the passengers. Variable colour and intensity can be implemented and driver in vehicle orientation will be enhanced when the LED lighting is used as a functional element.

The paper shows the importance of an integrated design approach for high power LEDs. That includes electronics, heat dissipation, mechanical design and optics for the light distribution. It emphasizes the necessity of thermal and optical simulations to proof the design in the early development process and proposes solutions for the technology specific challenges like dimming, colour change or cost effective thermal management.
