The objective of the AUTOSAR partnership is the establishment of an open standard for automotive E/E software architecture (AUTOSAR - Automotive Open System ARchitecture). The AUTOSAR partnership has been in place now for five years. Since that time AUTOSAR provided a methodology, templates and detailed software specifications for automotive products. The main idea behind the AUTOSAR standard, which is currently available as revision 3.0, is to uncouple software implemented functions from the microcontrollers and electronic control unit (ECU) hardware through an intermediate and strictly defined layer. The standard provide as a basic infrastructure for the management of functions within applications and standard software modules. AUTOSAR's strength lies in its ability to facilitate data exchange between supplier's solutions, customer's applications, and vehicle platforms.

Implementation of release 2.0 and 2.1, and integration in an Engine Management System (EMS) showed that some AUTOSAR concepts lead to resources over consumption compared with a proprietary implementation. However, by making more intelligent choices -clustering implementation, smart configuration- the overheads could be considerably reduced. Due to EMS needs and constraints it was necessary to extend the standard by additional features and interfaces and to make adaptations.

Engine Systems is preparing a business unit optimized BSW platform with elements from AUTOSAR release 3.0. Engine Systems future mainstream platform will be based on release 4.0. R4.0 of AUTOSAR is scheduled for a fall 2009 released and is expected to solve a number of issues in earlier releases. R4.0 will include conformance tests, safety features and more functional interfaces.

Engine Systems is prepared for AUTOSAR rollout.
