The AUTOSAR development partnership developed a methodology for specifying and designing automotive software systems. The methodology is based on a software architecture abstracting the application software layer from specific ECU hardware features. The deliverables released by AUTOSAR are a set of specification documents describing the AUTOSAR methodology and the Basic Software Modules.

The AUTOSAR development partnership develops a complete set of specifications in dedicated work packages. As verification steps each specification undergoes several review steps within the partnership. To validate all specifications the AUTOSAR development partnership decided to let implement and integrate all Basic Software Modules specified.

This paper gives an overview of the used approach to validate the AUTOSAR specifications. After the implementation of the Basic Software Modules by several implementers the modules have been integrated onto different hardware platforms. A bottom up strategy was used to set up a software system and a light weight tool based variant management supported the proof of the exchangeability of the Basic Software Modules. For the integration AUTOSAR specified test cases to verify that the interfaces and functionality of the modules fit together and behave as specified. To show further aspects the paper explains how AUTOSAR proved the transferability of software components throughout the network. Based on the AUTOSAR Runtime Environment an exemplary application was implemented and distributed onto several hardware platforms up to 4 ECUs which were interconnected via CAN and FlexRay. Finally the approach lead to an improvement of the AUTOSAR Basic Software specifications and it is applicable as a generic approach for further integration tasks within an automotive product development.
