Abstract

Abstract

Future emission limits of diesel engines require additional effort for developing adequate and advanced exhaust gas aftertreatment devices. DPF and urea-SCR systems are a promising approach to reduce particulate matter and nitric oxide emissions. Computer models as a complementary tool to experimental investigations help to make design decisions and to shorten the development process. Therefore, this work presents a comprehensive overview of both DPF and SCR simulation approaches. All model equations are summarized and all relevant conversion reactions are discussed. 1D simulations studies are performed in order to investigate details of reaction mechanisms and to optimize individual aftertreatment devices. 3D simulations are used for fine tuning and for the final evaluation of the overall system performance.
