Abstract
Heat transfer between cooling oil film and grooved separator-friction plate pair of multi-disks in clutch disengaged arrangement is investigated using a numerical approach based on finite element method. This offer us the possibility to reach Navier-Stokes and energy equations solutions both governing such flows. A first set of adiabatic numerical calculations is carried to determine preponderant geometrical and dynamical parameters that contribute to viscous torque. Expression of dimensionless torque and Reynolds number are then defined, and numerical values yield finally to analytical relations between these two dimensionless group in laminar and turbulent cases. Second numerical stage focuses on forced convection heat transfer characterized by Nusselt number. Numerical heat flux applied here to surface disks is evaluated from previous dimensionless torque and angular velocities. Nusselt number is related to Prandtl number, Reynolds number, and dimensionless products linked to disks and groove geometry. Results emphasize inlet velocity effects, and also groove parameters contribution in heat transfer.
