Abstract
This paper describes several studies on detecting syncope while automotive driving. Firstly, we considered the influences of syncope on driving states such as driving, braking, and coasting. This consideration reveals that syncope makes drivers fall into unconscious coasting state. Then, we set the unconscious coasting state with very low vehicle speed as an object of detection in this study. Moreover, we built an algorithm by which we should detect syncope on driving states. Also, we built an experimental environment using an OBD-2 tester as a measuring instrument. In this environment we can experiment using a usual car e.g. a rented car. So it is one of the greatest benefits that we can take experimental data on public road without any constraints. Finally we experimentally confirmed the potential to detect the unconscious coasting state with very low vehicle speed using both our algorithm and experimental environment.
