Abstract

A new method for detecting zebra-crossings is presented. In case of applying it to active safety and driver assistance systems, it is desirable that low-resolution zebra-crossings in the distant region can be detected. The conventional edge-based detection schemes are hard to achieve satisfactory results under such conditions. To overcome this problem, the complex wavelet transform is employed. The amplitude and phase characteristics obtained by the complex wavelet transform provide key information to detect zebra-crossings even in low-resolution. Experimental results show that the proposed method outperformed the conventional edge-based detection methods, especially if the zebra-crossings are in lowresolution and degraded.
