Abstract

In recent years, driving support systems have been introduced to the market not only for longitudinal direction, but also for latitudinal directions. Warning systems for vehicles in adjacent lanes to the rear (also known as the blind spot area) is no exception. We focused on further enhancing driver support for situations with vehicles present in such blind spot area, by developing a system which incorporates direct yaw moment control in addition to auditory and visual assistance. The system detects a vehicle currently in the blind spot area using radar and also provides a visual and audible warning if a vehicle exists in posterior lateral region and the driver attempts a lane change. To realize such system, we introduced a design to conduct feedback control not only according to the detected obstacle, but also the relationship between lane-markers. The control prompts the driver to return to the center of the lane by creating a yaw moment in the opposite direction of the lane change.
