Abstract

A 4-wheeled automobile during higher deceleration braking event has high probability of experiencing rear axle lift due to vehicle architecture and disproportionate weight distribution which have significant influence on vehicle stability and may lead to take away customer confidence during sudden braking. Above situation always provides a challenge to the design approach and conventional method being followed in it. This paper proposes a novel approach & methodology to predict instantaneous deceleration required for rear axle lift phenomenon with the assumption of vehicle to be a rigid body. This paper also provides correlation on theoretical vs actual decelerations required for rear axle to lift & aims to bridge the gap between them through studying the contribution of suspension characteristics through actual vehicle testing and physical measurements. It makes a helpful stride towards giving a correction factor to the rigid body assumption. This paper helps in providing sufficient aid/tool for system designer to factor suspension characteristics and vehicle architecture into early level of system designs and make necessary amendments at initial stage of prototype development rather than late changes, to create a product which gives safe driving experience.
