Abstract

Corrosion is the deterioration of a metal due to chemical reactions between metal and the surrounding environment. This paper explains a method used to study the influence of environmental factors on corrosion and determine their relationship with each other to produce maximum corrosion on metal parts The four major environmental factors that influence the corrosion are temperature, humidity, pH and concentration of salt solution acting on a metal part. Coupons are used to study the effect of environmental factors and coupon mass loss methods were used to measure the corrosion severity. The study summarizes that the maximum corrosion on the coupon was observed when both temperature and humidity is high with low salt concentration and nominal pH of salt solution. This combination of environmental factors can be used to study the corrosion behavior on any automotive metallic parts during material selection
