Abstract

Semi modular dashboard is an innovative design for high performance efficiency, high volume production & low-cost assembly. It also controls logistics, reduced inventory and consistent quality. Secondary objective of this semi modular construction is to have simpler architecture for easier service and reduced maintenance costs for customers. Most global OEM’s follow the cockpit concept to reduce the takt time to meet the daily production volumes and have better quality control on the cockpit module such as fit-finish, subsystem functionalities, electrical system integration etc. In this paper, we discuss the semi modular design useful for less complex type dashboard construction. This concept explains the semi modular cockpit in a six step, Design for Serviceability: Easy serviceable modular airbag unit which are tailor made to suit semi modular dashboard assembly and with unique slide type HVAC to duct interface design. Time for Serviceability: Serviceability time is much lesser as compared to modular IP. Design for Cost & Min Investment: Compact cassette type discrete airbag cost effective solution, assembly process involving supplier sub assembly and the OEM offline assembly. Design for Optimized testing and validation: The division is made based on the safety requirements, matrix which categorized the assembly operations into different buckets based on investment, logistics and inventory optimization. Design for recyclability & sustainability: It includes in detail the selection matrix and product quality parameters based on which recyclable material and minimal wastage is ensured. Logistic & Transportation: There was a huge improvement in logistics and inventory savings for this type of semi-modular dashboard versus the cockpit construction.
