Abstract

After treatment selection plays an important role in engine development to meet stringent emission legislations and customer demands. A huge effort and cost is involved in proper selection and calibration of exhaust after treatment hardware on the testbed. In order to minimize this effort involved in hardware development, a methodology is presented in this paper for initial estimation of soot load in DPF using 1D simulation tool for BSVI/Stage V applications. The 1D simulation model also connotes the ash deposition inside the DPF, hence giving a good initial assessment of ash cleaning interval. This experimental investigation of DPF regeneration and ash cleaning strategy will eventually help in optimizing the EAS hardware sizes. The model makes use of detailed reaction kinetics and pre-defined reaction models for the simulation of soot regeneration. Since an accurate DPF soot loading prediction is the key to efficient regeneration strategy, a well calibrated 1D simulation model was used to estimate the soot balance point, soot accumulation and soot burn rate of a medium duty commercial application vehicle. Different vehicle duty cycles and BSVI emission legislative cycles (WHTC) were run on the testbed to ratify the results with the simulation model generated data.
