Abstract

Automotive drivetrains experience snap engagement of clutch by inexperienced drivers while operating vehicle. These events induce high dynamic torques and impact loads on driveline components. Sudden impact torque and loads in such events can exceed the design torque threshold, resulting in damage of drive train components. To avoid failures, it is vital to study the snap engagement behavior in early stages of powertrain development process. This paper presents, high fidelity modelling and analysis of vehicle driveline in ‘Multi-Body Dynamics’ simulation software to understand snap engagement of clutch. High fidelity MBD simulation of driveline torsional model provides opportunity to observe the drive and coast dynamic response during the snap engagement event. Simulation results and correlation with physical test are presented. Detailed study on understanding related to the dynamics of clutch snap engagement and how it is affected by the complex interactions between drive line components is presented. Effect of different parameters on post engagement response of the drivetrain is also discussed.
