Abstract

This study is based on finding a solution to identify the blockage of an air filter element of internal combustion engine motor vehicles. According to the statistics, it was revealed that majority of drivers and vehicle owners do not have idea of blockage of air filter. According to service advisors and workshop supervisors, most of the complaints are coming with lack of pulling power and high fuel consumption, but while on the service they have noticed that the most of vehicles are driven with blocked air filter and it was noticed only during servicing. The air flow rate through the air filter to intake manifold is measured by using the two air flow sensors. If the flow is lower than the pre-determined rate of flow through the air filter, the signal is generated to indicate the blockage of air filter element to drive to check the necessity of replacement or cleaning of the filter. Therefore, two air flow sensors are placed; one is before the air filter element and other is after the air filter. Finally, it was calculated and compares the reading of two sensors and compare with pre-determined ratings. If the difference is less than the given rate, it can be justified that the air filter is partially blocked and physical inspection is necessary, checked it is either clean or replaced. If the air flow is too lower than the given rate the element should be replaced. If the pressure difference is identified, it in indicated to the drive switching the busser installed in drivers’ compartment.
