Abstract

Oil droplets are carried along with blow-by gas in an IC engine which needs to be separated, otherwise they will enter into intake system and worsen emissions. Air oil separator is used to separate oil droplets from the blow-by gases and lot of time/money is spent on repeated testing for the development of separator designs. The objective of the current study is to employ numerical modeling to predict oil separation efficiency and thus developing different oil separator designs. The separator design development is improved by employing CFD techniques which predict the performance of air oil separator in separating oil mist. The oil separation efficiency obtained by using the current CFD methodology is compared with the experimental data which confirms that good amount of accuracy is possible to achieve for practical purpose using this methodology.
