Abstract

Clutch pedal feel is one of the main contributor to quality perception and customer appeal while driving. There are various parameters which controls pedal actuation feel, Engagement/ Disengagement points being one of them. With ever continuing new launches and powertrain upgrades, virtual simulation plays a great role in reducing the cost and testing time during development phase. In this paper a 1-D model is discussed which captures the physics and behavior of clutch actuation system, including the friction and losses at each component. Once the model is calibrated, it’s then used to predict clutch release system behavior due to change of parts or variation of any vehicle parameter. The model predicts engagement and disengagement point and its behavior with respect to change in vehicle parameters (vehicle mass, tire radius) and clutch pack characteristics (pressure plate lift-off curves, clutch friction coefficient).
