Abstract

A large movement of engine occurs in the event of vibration during rapid/hard accelerations, sudden stops, or turning on/off ignition key. Engine torque damper (ETD) reduces engine movement which will improve life of mounts, improves vehicle control, balance, stability and reduce shock loads on driveline components due to smoother gear shifting. It also reduces wear on exhaust system joints. The objective of this work is to develop engine torque damper for passenger car. The two concepts of engine torque dampers are designed and analyzed, such as U-spring ETD concept and shock absorber ETD concept. Also the prototypes of the selected concepts are tested experimentally. The result shows significant reduction in vibration levels during vehicle launch or idling using engine torque dampers. The U-spring ETD and shock absorber ETD concept reduces vibration level by 14 % and, 35% respectively. This also improves the ride quality by minimizing vibrations transferred to the body.
