Abstract

India is expected to follow tighter BS VI emission norms and Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFÉ) regulations from 2020 onwards. This directive from the Indian government has posed significant challenges for the Original Engine Manufacturers (OEMs) for adopting new engine technologies for meeting the targets stipulated by the Indian government. Indian auto industry is trying to develop cost effective and affordable technologies especially for indigenous market. Technological changes in engine and driveline including after treatment devices require specific high performance customized lubricants differentiated from conventional categories and OEMs are coming up with more stringent lubricant specifications for their upcoming engines. The objective of this study is to investigate the effects of various formulation approaches followed while developing customized engine lubricants, on engine performance including fuel efficiency. Studies have been done on gasoline engine oils of viscosity grades like SAE 10W-30, 5W-30, 0W-20, 0W-16 meeting various performance specifications like API SJ, SL,SM and API SN .
