Abstract

Road traffic accidents cause one of the highest numbers of severe injuries. Virtual biomechanical human body models play an important role to assess injuries during impact loading especially for scenarios, where complex dynamical loading is taken into account. It concerns mainly vulnerable road users like a motorcycle or other two wheeler riders. Additionally, the virtual biomechanical human body models can serve for development and optimization of personal protective equipment. The motorcycle riders may use wide spectra of personal protective equipment, but the helmet is one of the most important ones. The presented study exploits existing scalable human body model Virthuman, couples it to helmet and assess its contribution to the injury risk decrease. By the means of the study, the numerical assessment of personal protective equipment such as helmet and its contribution to decreasing the injury risk is stated.
