Automated Driving as Enabler for Urban Mobility Transition

Abstract

Due to the four worldwide megatrends Environment, Urbanization, Digitalization and Aging Societies there is a great opportunity to introduce new approaches to realize safe, affordable and sustainable mobility solutions. The introduction of those new mobility concepts are enabled and driven by fast evolving knowledge around Digitalization, Connectivity, Automated Driving and Shared Mobility. These items provide the solid building blocks towards the creation of new mobility solutions. Car-Sharing already represents a way to share traditional, privately owned cars between several users and is an established complementary way to use cars. The raise of Automated Driving (AD) technologies, covering a wide spectrum of automation levels, will add another dimension to that. On the one hand it will enable driverless mobility solutions like robocabs without steering wheel and pedals which will be tailored to be used in designated areas - “Everything Somewhere”. These robocabs are pointing primarily towards urban applications. On the other hand there is the fast evolution of the AD abilities of traditional privately owned cars, e.g., providing the option to drive automatically on highways and rural roads according to the request of the driver - “Something Everywhere”. In addition to this two-way deployment of Automated Driving the borders between individual, public and goods transportation will blur because all of the mobility puzzle pieces will finally become a part of a holistic mobility concept including an ecosystem of digital traffic infrastructure. Main focus of the customers will be to get a tailored, seamless, timely, affordable and comfortable transport from one place to another choosing the best option out of a large variety of transport means. AD technology is the core building block to enable this future seamless mobility world. This paper gives an outlook on the contribution and integration of already existing AD solutions to build the basis for future mobility concepts, how migration strategies could be followed and how the related ecosystem will evolve. Furthermore, examples of different use cases are shown and it is explained how these solutions can be applied to other areas of transportation.
