Abstract
The contemporary innovation in automotive sector is focused on development of autonomous vehicles. While this applies to the entire vehicle, innovators already have started developing and deploying autonomous subsystems at component level and individual functional level in vehicles in order to achieve desired goals for safety, fuel efficiency, durability and quieter operation of the vehicle. One important function of the vehicle is parking. With the recent boom of automotive sector in India in the past decade, Indian roads have been inundated with vehicles of all categories. With less road space and more vehicles, parallel parking has assumed significance. Additionally, it is a big challenge in terms of maneuverability when left to the skills of the driver. This paper focuses on a frugal solution that automates the entire parallel parking procedure so that the driver of the vehicle is spared of the effort, and enabling a wide variety of driver dexterity. The solution also lays emphasis specifically on Indian road topographical conditions and addresses associated parking challenges thereof. The simulations have indicated that the parallel parking assignment is a lot better with the driver kept in the loop so that he can intervene if need be.
