ABSTRACT - Despite the strong development of mechatronic in railway, secondary braking systems remain fully pneumatic, due to a high level of reliability and security required. Pneumatic systems are characterized by highly non-linear behavior, which makes difficult all predictive modeling approaches. Development relies on representative functional integration bench including up to 30 vehicles. The dynamic behavior of each brake valve is then experimentally adjusted according to the type of train (passenger or freight). In an effort to reduce or eliminate this integration step, a simulation approach is undertaken using the LMS Amesim software.

The first step, subject of this presentation, shows how to associate a model of pressure wave propagation in pipes with a parametric model of the behavior of each brake valve. The results are encouraging and consistent with experimental results. In a next future, this multi-physics modeling of the complete braking system will be an outstanding help to design cycle, allowing to cut time consuming and costly test phase. The goal is to eliminate or simplify the functional integration bench while extending the test phase with simulation of ambient temperature changes, failure mode etc..
