Abstract

The measurement of brake dust particles is a complex challenge owing to the open emission system, where the particles are spread into the environment. The aim of the measurement is to compare the wheel brake with other particle emitters, especially the exhaust of combustion engines. Therefore, the emissions generated by different friction materials are measured along standard cycles (NEDC, WLTC) with a special evacuation chamber. In addition, influence factors on particle flow and resulting particle measurement are presented and compared. Additional advanced research topics in connection with brake particles are the chemical composition of different particle size classes and the run-in behavior (Bedding).
