Abstract

ABSTRACT - Many scientists and engineers have spent much time and efforts trying to solve the problem of brake squeal by means of experimental, analytical and computational techniques. However, universal theory has not been found yet to explain the mechanism of brake squeal. There are still no systematic and effective measures to predict and eliminate brake squeal in engineering applications. In this paper, the main effect factors on disc brake squeal at high braking speeds are investigated using finite element analysis method and validated by experiments. A finite element model of the braking system is built based on the braking system of the test rig TM-1 used in this study. The influence factors of brake squeal are analysed by complex eigenvalue method using ABAQUS. Simulation results show that sliding speed, contact pressure, friction coefficient, and contact stiffness of brake disc and pads are critical factors to the generation of brake squeal. Numerous experiments have been carried out to verify the critical effect factors on brake squeal induced by braking actions with powder metallurgy braking pads and cast iron discs.
