ABSTRACT - This paper introduces a friction materials subscale inertia test (named SIT hereafter) in terms of working principle, test equipment and experiments. Similar to the inertia test conducted on the brake dynamometer, SIT carries out inertia braking at each brake cycle while the equivalent inertia is reduced according to the relevant parameters, which will dramatically save both energy costs and time. Comparison tests were conducted on both dynamometer and SIT equipment using the same test procedure ISO-26867. The test results are presented and analyzed. A new universal test standard independent of vehicle is desiderated since the current inertia dynamometer test procedures can not suit SIT well, which will be one of our major works in the near future.
