ABSTRACT - In the recent years alternative drive technologies like electric and hybrid vehicles have been become increasingly important. Electric vehicles will achieve ranges that are sufficient for everyday use only with efficient batteries, intelligent energy management and especially the recovery of braking energy. Hybrid and electric vehicles with regenerative braking system recover kinetic energy via the electric motor and store it as electrical energy. In recent years many companies and research groups have developed lots of different and promising recuperation techniques with their own advantages and disadvantages. The system discussed in this work is called electromechanical brake booster and combines the advantages of the conventional vacuum based brake systems (coupled brake pedal and booster achieving the conventional brake pedal feel) with that of an electrohydraulic unit (efficient energy recuperation by brake blending). In this study we show a successful development and implantation of an electromechanical brake booster achieving a maximum efficiency of recuperation by using brake blending. Therefore Volkswagen considers this system the ideal solution for future brake boosting.
