The Prediction Of Pad Vibration In A Noisy Disc Brake Using Multibody Dynamics Analysis.

Abstract

The vibration of a disc brake pad comprising friction material and a steel backplate in an automotive disc brake assembly has been modelled by multibody dynamic (MBD) analysis in a full, flexible body, 3D brake simulation. Sliding frictional contact between the friction material and the rotating disc was modelled using a nonlinear impact contact algorithm to link with the “hammering” mechanism proposed by Rhee (1989). Vibrational modes of the brake pads have been predicted which showed considerable similarities to published experimental observations [Bryant et al, 2012], and suggest that a dynamic mechanism in the vibrational response of the pad in the caliper could be generated with a constant coefficient of friction. It is concluded that the MBD approach has strong potential for modelling and investigating brake noise source and response mechanisms for brake noise propensity predictions.
