SAFETraff represents an integrated platform for traffic monitoring, information and incident management being designed in a research project within the national framework research programmes. Solutions for traffic monitoring are nowadays enough frequent. However, the approach of this project took into consideration several factors, amongst which are: the necessity of integrating the system into a commonly operated platform for traffic and travel information, building an open system for future extension, adopting the most reliable and cost effective solutions for the traffic sensing, without affecting the road infrastructure, easiness of installation etc. The project is now in the fourth phase and some tests with the designed equipment have been performed both in urban and highway environment. The results of these tests and the solutions proposed by the project are presented here.
