Abstract

Optical quality control is a common task in industry. These systems are mainly based on 2D technology where overhead/lateral views are the only views that are inspected. This solution is valid for simple objects (i.e. bottles) that can for example lie on a conveyor belt always in the same position. However, these systems cannot deal with complex objects such us the ones used in the automotive industry where dimensions, angles and texture need to be checked. In this field it is necessary to inspect every part of the object. This is only possible if we have a full 3D representation of the object. One of the features of our system is the acquisition of images all over the object. In order to achieve this, the object is scanned in free fall, thus, the object is not in contact with any surface and occlusions are avoided. Another advantage of free fall is the elimination of complex mechanics to manipulate the object.
