Abstract

Introduction to IDIADA's Torque Vectoring technology for electric vehicles: delivering active driving dynamics with integral active safety and energy efficiency.

Recent developments of in-wheel or near-wheel electric motor drive systems have opened the way for independent wheel drive to become a production reality. By being able to proportion traction and braking torques to each corner individually, the concept known as “Torque Vectoring” in its purest form can be realized.

Parallel advances in the adoption of active safety means that systems such as ESP will soon be mandatory on all new European vehicles. These active safety systems continually monitor the vehicle state and are very efficient at controlling vehicle stability when approaching and exceeding limit situations. Taking a holistic approach to the functionality of active safety systems, intelligent driving dynamics and energy management, IDIADA unifies the ESC system with Torque Vectoring such that optimized vehicle dynamics is obtained.

In doing this, IDIADA has worked with electric motor suppliers, vehicle propulsion system teams and active safety suppliers to create a motor controller that can deliver an enjoyable driver experience and safety while at the same time being flexible to vehicle and drive configuration.

This paper describes the principles of IDIADA’s torque vectoring system.
