Abstract

Historically within the tyres development and validation testing field as far as dynamic behaviour is concerned, there has been a tendency to focus the evaluation of them by following only subjective patterns.

Currently, the SEAT chassis department performs some vehicle dynamics measurements of different parameters in order to support the subjective evaluation of the tyre. These measurements are executed in parallel with the subjective tests. This process is carried out in a handling track.

To check these results we have performed a series of tests according to ISO 7401 and 4138. These tests are carried out in the dynamic platform and their target is to establish a set of patterns. Later, they will be compared with the results obtained in the handling track. Although the tests are apparently very different, we could establish correlations with determined basic parameters of the vehicle dynamic behaviour.

Besides the advantage of describing the dynamic behaviour graphically, this procedure allows us to quantify the differences in several measured variables, thus giving us the chance to rank the results in the different behaviour voices. To develop our study we have carried out comparison between tyres of the same size but different specifications.

Furthermore this methodology can be applied not only to tyres validation, but also to assess any other component affecting the vehicle dynamics.
