Abstract
In this paper, a real-time mean-value engine model for a downsized 1-litre gasoline engine, using a novel patented electrical driven supercharger from Dynamic Boosting Systems and a conventional turbocharger, is presented. The electrically-driven supercharger operates below 3000rpm, above which only the turbocharger is running. The engine model was developed in Matlab/Simulink environment and each component in the model is described in details in the paper. Meanwhile a higher fidelity 1-D engine model was developed using AVL Boost. Simulation results from the mean value model showed good agreement with the 1-D CFD Boost model. The downsized engine achieved impressive performance comparable to a 1.4- litre naturally-aspirated gasoline engine in the simulation study. The model developed in this study will be used in future controller design and hardware-in-the-loop simulation study.
