Abstract

A complete set of emission measurements have been carried out over the regulatory European certification cycle and steady state driving conditions on production vehicles of the same model type equipped with different engine technologies : two different Diesel engines ( Pre-chamber vs. Direct Injection ) with similar displacement, both intercooled turbo-charged versions ) and two Gasoline engines ( Multi-Port-Injection vs. Direct Injection ) both TWC equipped.

The emission tests included both Regulated and Un-regulated Pollutants, in addition fuel consumptions were measured and compared. As an additional item for the comparison, the exhaust particulate emissions were evaluated according to various criteria including Mass, Size/Number distribution and chemical composition. At the end, this comparison is based on a multi-criteria approach revealing the pros and cons of the different systems.
