Abstract

Compressed Natural Gas ( CNG ) has proved to be a promising fuel and researchers are involved in developing a system compatible to the existing gasoline and diesel run vehicles. Optimal utilization of the higher heating value and the higher octane rating of this fuel has opened avenues to explore the areas of developing new engine technology, combustion chamber design, ignition system, fuel supply systems, combustion phenomenon and emissions. These are further supplemented by using proven techniques like electronic fuel injection, exhaust gas recirculation ( EGR ), turbo charged systems and development of new catalytic converters to enhance power output and also abide by the emission norms.

The present work aims at developing a dedicated CNG engine technology able to compete the conventional engines in terms of power and torque characteristics. The work is being carried out in successive stages after repeated experimental studies to study the significance of stroke to bore ratios ( LDRs ) on the fuel supply ( carburetor/mixer ), intake and exhaust manifold and intake and exhaust valves and the piston assembly. The parts were further designed to evaluate the stresses acting on them. The designed values were again compared with a standard 4-S, 100 c.c gasoline engine and the results have faired well with the measured values.
