DVR safety programmes consist of a variety of learning opportunities offered to all motorists. Based on vehicle classification, there is a range of specialised programmes available for the various driver groups, with all programmes being similarly designed and following the same teaching principles. The longest standing programme is the safety training programme for private car drivers; this programme looks back on a history of thirty years. These programmes, combined with other activities, form an essential part of Germany´s road safety education activities.
My presentation comes in four parts: the first one is an introduction of the organisation that coordinates all the programmes the German Road Safety Council, or DVR. The second part explains the basic philosophy of the safety programmes. Part three introduces one of the safety programmes, light goods vehicles driver training, in detail, and part four takes a closer look at the overall benefits delivered by the programmes.
